What We Collect
ZoningScan collects minimal data to operate the service. When you search an address, we process the address, city, and state you enter. We do not require an account or login for basic lookups.
- Search queries: Address, city, and state entered in the search form. These are sent to our server to generate reports.
- Server logs: IP address, request path, timestamp, and response status are logged for security and debugging. Logs are automatically deleted after 3–30 days depending on severity.
- API keys: If you sign up for API access, we store your email and API key.
Analytics & Cookies
We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how people use the site — page views, traffic sources, and general usage patterns. GA sets cookies in your browser. You can opt out by declining the cookie consent banner or by using a browser extension like Google's Analytics Opt-out.
We also use a local storage flag (zoningscan_cookie_consent) to remember your cookie consent preference.
Data Sources
All environmental, zoning, flood, and land use data displayed in reports comes from publicly available federal databases (EPA, FEMA, USGS, USFWS, NRCS, Census Bureau, NPS, HIFLD). We do not collect or store personal information from these sources.
How We Use Your Data
- To generate environmental and zoning reports you request
- To cache results and improve response times
- To monitor service health and prevent abuse (rate limiting)
- To improve the product based on aggregate usage patterns
We do not sell your data. We do not share personal information with third parties except as required by law.
Data Retention
- Info-level server logs: 3 days
- Warning-level logs: 3 days
- Error-level logs: 30 days
- Cached reports: indefinite (public data only)
